If there are essential jobs that need doing and simple decorative work then it is best to do this.
For items such as kitchens and bathrooms if you are selling immediately then in most cases it is best to leave as is simply because a buyer may wish to put their own ideas in to the property.
You should also remember that sometimes the investment you make late in the day on your property may not be recovered in your sale price. For example if your property is on the market and not moving or attracting any viewings it could be do with the sale price being too high rather than anything being particularly wrong with the property.
